THE BENEFITS
Through the EmpowerAbility Mentorship Program, students can learn from professionals with lived experience of disability and experience moving from university to the workplace. Each student is matched with a mentor who can answer questions, share experiences and offer support. The program helps students build skills, explore career options and learn about workplace accommodations. It also helps students build confidence as they prepare for work and reach their career goals.
WHO CAN JOIN
The EmpowerAbility Mentorship Program is open to third- and fourth-year York University students with lived experience of disability. Students with visible, invisible, and episodic disabilities are encouraged to apply. This program is for students who want support as they prepare for their future careers. Participants will connect with a mentor, explore their field of interest and learn about the workplace.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The EmpowerAbility Mentorship Program runs online from October to March and follows the York University school calendar. Mentors and mentees will meet online twice a month. Students can apply during September by completing a short form and brief interview. Students who are accepted will be told in early October and matched with a mentor soon after. Before the program starts, an orientation package and a mentorship agreement will need to be completed. The program does not run during reading weeks, the winter break or exam periods. Mentees will also complete surveys before and after the program.
