Plugins provide additional optional functionality not available out-of-the-box from WordPress.
At York, WordPress websites come with specific and approved pre-installed Plugins available for any websites to use. Any plugin not available with the York 2020 theme would need to be reviewed before approval. To request a new plugin, please reach out to cpadigit@yorku.ca and share the plugin title, link, functionality and why this is needed vs the plugins available.
The following is reviewed before a Plugin is installed on the York 2020 Theme WordPress:
- whether there is already a plugin in the system that does what the requested plugin does (redundancy);
- whether the plugin works with the multi-site install of WordPress used at York; and
- whether the plugin is secure and well maintained
Note: There is no guarantee that a plugin will be approved and installed and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
To see which Plugins are available:
- Log into your WordPress website
- Click on Plugins
All Plugins available will be listed there. It is best to uninstall any Plugin that is not in-use. Too many Plugins installed on a website can affect functionality and make the site appear "broken". A recommended maximum number of Plugins is 12 as to not slow down page speed and optimize your website.
