York Lions Stadium Conversion

This project has been a collaborative effort between York’s Facilities Services Department and Athletics and Recreation Department, and various partner-contractors. The new conversion will create a multi-sport, year-round, revenue-generating facility on the site of the existing YLS  that was completed for the 2015 Pan Am games.

The transformation project includes some of the following enhancements:

  • Removal of the running track to accommodate professional fields of play
  • Mondo track replaced with an asphalt perimeter, expanding playing surface
  • Playing surface moved closer to the stands
  • Sized for soccer, football and rugby
  • An air-supported 450’ X 250’ X 75’ seasonal dome
  • The Farley dome has an insulation “bubble pack” to generate up to 50% savings on heating costs
  • Removal of natural grass playing surface and replaced by artificial turf
  • Dome will cover the turf approximately five months of the year
  • A full CFL-size playing field of 110 yards from goal-line-to-goal-line with two 20- yard end zones
  • An international soccer field 105m X 65m
  • A FIFA Quality Pro certified turf installed by Field Turf

The dome is being completed and planning to have occupancy permit for the week of Dec 6, 2021, making this already world class facility an all-season activity destination for the York community.

The stadium’s current seating capacity of 4,000 can be increased to 12,500 by adding temporary bleachers.
