Faculty-led Study Abroad Courses

Learn about a new culture, country, develop and enhance language skills or try and discover something entirely new – the world is your classroom! Take our courses for 1-6 weeks during York University Terms and earn between 3.0 – 6.0 credits that will count toward your degree at York.

How can I participate in the program?

Step 1

Browse through our courses and ensure you meet their eligibility requirements. Attend an information session to find out more about the courses.

Step 2

Submit an application form for the course you're interested in ahead of the deadline.

Step 3

After you've been accepted, pay for your program fee, tuition, flight expenses and travel insurance. Complete Safety Abroad requirements.

Step 4

Attend a mandatory pre-departure session to learn about your course, destination country, and more.

Step 5

Join your peers abroad and immerse yourself in a one-of-a-kind learning experience.

Step 6

Attend post-course debrief sessions to provide feedback and share your stories.

About Faculty-led Student Abroad Courses

COURSE DETAILS

Explore the world and enrich your education with our Faculty-led Study Abroad Courses, available throughout the year, with the majority falls into the summer semesters. Delve into unique academic experiences with smaller class sizes, typically ranging from 10 to 20 students, fostering meaningful connections with both your professor and peers.

Our courses strike the perfect balance between in-class learning and exciting site visits. Picture yourself spending immersive days in foreign classrooms, absorbing knowledge, and then embarking on captivating excursions to historical and cultural landmarks relevant to your course subject. Some faculty-led study abroad courses even offer unforgettable overnight or weekend trips, adding an extra layer of adventure to your academic journey.

COURSE ELIGIBILITY

Every undergraduate student (Canadian or international, in some cases, graduate students are welcome as well) can participate.

General Program Eligibility Requirements:

Students must be at least 18 years of age by the time they undertake a study abroad course.
Students must have a valid passport and obtain a visa (if needed) at least 1 month before program start date. Their passport should be valid until at least 6 months after their intended return date, depending on their program country. Check the embassy/ consulate pages for specific country requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS...

You can first go to the information sessions organized for the course(s) that you are interested in and learn more information before you make a decision. You can then apply by filling out the Faculty-led Study Abroad Application Form for the course(s) that you are interested in. When filling in the application, please ensure that you meet all the requirements outlined for the specific course(s).

*** Remember to keep a close eye on application deadlines! Due to the high volume of interest and applications, applications submitted after the deadline will need to seek instructor’s approval beforehand.

The expenses of a Faculty-led Study Abroad course include:

Program fee: paid to York International, including accommodation, study and cultural trips, local transport, and other hosted activities. (Please also be aware that program fees are approximate and are subject to change based on the final number of students enrolled in the course, foreign exchange rate fluctuations, and other factors beyond York International’s control.)
Tuition: paid directly to York University as per other courses. Amount varies, whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, domestic or international student (refer to the Student Financial Services website for more information).
Flights*: to and from your destination. York University does not make flight nor travel insurance arrangements for students. For each course, you will be given specific information as to when to arrive and where will you be picked up and dropped off. Any activities or plans made outside our course program are the student’s responsibility.
Food expenses: you will need to cover these costs during portions of your trip.
Travel Insurance: Students are required to have the travel insurance approved by York University. Students must register directly with GuardMe.
Spending money: on personal and miscellaneous costs.
Visa: Some students may require a tourist visa to enter their program country. If a visa is required, it is the student’s responsibility to apply well ahead of their program start date and pay for their own visa.

York University has financial support available to help offset the costs of your program abroad. Students who participate in a faculty-led study abroad program and finish all the safety abroad steps will be given the York International Mobility Award (YIMA). No application is needed. AFTER THE APPLICATION PROCESS...

Thank you for filling out the application form. To complete the process, you will need to:

Pay your deposit of CAD500 and program fee before the deadline:

A $500 non-refundable* deposit per course must be submitted by the deadlines listed above. These fees are non-refundable once charged and are taken as a commitment that the student will participate in the study abroad course. All courses are capped, and spots are considered based on the course instructor’s decision.

Students who are accepted will receive a notification with instructions to complete the program fee payment online.

In case the remaining program fee is not paid before the deadline, your deposit of CAD500 will be refunded, and you will be automatically withdrawn from the course.

*Unless the courses are full.

2. Enroll in courses: Enroll in the course(s) through the REM system. Enrollment in these courses is restricted. Note that you will not be able to enroll in any course unless you have been approved to participate and have paid the deposit.

3. Coordinate with your course instructor before booking flights to and from your study abroad destination.

4. Complete all mandatory Safety Abroad steps, including purchasing travel insurance and adding your trip to York University's Travel Registry.

5. Lastly, you will need to attend the pre-departure session. This session will cover important information about the course, the destination, excursions, health and safety, etc. You will also have a chance to meet your course director and other students who have enrolled!

Make sure to keep an eye on your email inbox for important communications from YorkU. In the event of an emergency or another serious situation, the University will contact you as soon as possible with information, guidance, and a plan to get you home if needed.

After returning home, you will be invited to fill out the Faculty-led Study Abroad Feedback Form, and attend post-course debrief sessions to provide feedback and share your experiences. This information will help us enhance the program and provide inputs for promotion to future students.

If you'd prefer to share these first-hand experiences and answer student questions yourself, feel free to volunteer and attend next year's GoGlobal Fair and study abroad information sessions.

Students that wish to withdraw from a Faculty-led Study Abroad Course at any time must first contact the International Programs Coordinator at yuabroad@yorku.ca as well as their Course Director indicating the reason for withdrawal.

Course fees are subject to the financial deadlines set by York University. The program deposit fee is non-refundable, and no exceptions will be granted. The “course start date” is the date that the course begins in your program country abroad. Refunds of the remainder of the program fee will be given based on the following criteria/schedule:
