The Chancellor is the titular head of York University and confers all degrees.
As set out in the York University Act of 1965, the Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Governors after consultation with the Senate. The Chancellors holds office for three years or until their successor is appointed.
The Chancellor is a member of the Board of Governors, the Senate and the Subcommittee on Honorary Degrees and Ceremonials (Hon Docs).
Jointly with the President, the Chancellor selects recipients of honorary degrees from a pool of prospective recipients that has been approved by the Senate Sub-Committee on Honorary Degrees and Ceremonials.
