OIPA researches and analyzes data for the institution about students, faculty, staff, government funding and policies and is also responsible for reporting to government and external agencies. OIPA also coordinates York’s participation in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS).
National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures undergraduate student engagement: the extent to which students participate in educationally purposeful activities, how much time and effort they invest in their studies and how well their university facilitates such involvement. It surveys only students in their first year for study and in their fourth and graduating year of study. At York, it excludes Education and Law. For more information about the NSSE survey click here.
The NSSE Snapshot reports below provides, for each year level, a broad overview of York’s strengths and challenges via Engagement Indicators. These represent key dimensions of engagement summarized from clusters of questions and are represented in ten indicators organized into four themes. It also gives the questions York scores highest and lowest on, relative to the rest of Ontario, and how students assess their experience.
Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS)
The Canadian Graduate and Professional Survey (CGPSS) was undertaken in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019. This survey contains a wealth of information about graduate student satisfaction and experience. In 2010 more than 38,000 graduate students participated at 38 universities across Canada. In 2013, participation rose to 48 universities and to 50 universities in 2016 and 2019. The updated National dataset now contains information from more than 200,000 responses.
CGPSS 2022 will launch on January 17th and close on April 1st 2022. Your unique survey link will be sent directly to your York University email address.

Research-focused
The Quacquarelli Symonds World University (QS WUR) and Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) both put primary emphasis on research reputation, output, and impact. Notable differences are that THE WUR assigns a 15% weight for teaching reputation (which is highly correlated with research reputation) and QS WUR assigns a 10% weight for employer reputation. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU; previously the Shanghai Rankings) focuses entirely on research output and awards.
