Classification of Instructional Programs
Synonym(s): CIP
The Classification of Instructional Programs is a scheme of six-digit codes that classify instructional programs into a hierarchical classification. At York University, the scheme is used for reporting on and analysis of instructional programs, which allows comparisons with other institutions in Canada and the United States.
The classification originated in the United States and has been adapted and adopted by Statistics Canada for use across Canada.
The classification is expressed using six digits in the form xx.yyzz. The two-, four- and six-digit levels allow classification at different levels of specificity.
Programs at the two-digit level are bundled into general disciplinary categories or series (xx.0000). The four-digit level breaks two-digit disciplines into sub-disciplines or subseries (xx.yy00). The six-digit level has even more specific groupings known as instructional program classes nested within the two- and four-digit levels (xx.yyzz). In the 2021 revision, Statistics Canada uses 50 two-digit categories.
A list of CIP codes is available through Statistics Canada.
