A language proficiency test is used to determine if an applicant has an acceptable level of language ability in English or French to pursue studies at York University, if English or French is not the student's first language. 

Examples of language proficiency tests submitted and accepted by York to demonstrate English language proficiency are:

  •  International English Language Testing Service (IELTS)
  •  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Applicants to program (academic)s at the Glendon Campus may take a French language proficiency test instead of English.

Language tests accepted by York to demonstrate French proficiency include: 

  • Test de connaissance du français (TCF)
  • Test d’évaluation de français (TEF)
