Weighted Grant Unit

Weighted Grant Unit

Synonym(s): WGU

A weighted grant unit (WGU) is a measure used to allocate government funding to universities. Universities are given a base level of operating funding (Core Operating Grant) based on a specific level of eligible enrolment, equal to the total weighted grant units multiplied by a global funding rate per WGU. Programs have different weights to account for differences in program (academic) costs. The Core Operating Grant of York University is determined by the total number of WGU’s, weighted by both program and full-time equivalent enrolment.

Each eligible program has a WGU value which weights the funding received for each eligible student enrolled in the program. The weights are designed to account for the differences in costs for each program and are both specific to the program and level of study. Weights can be assigned both at the subject level using Formula Program of Study (FORPOS) Codes and at the individual program level.

The University's Shared Accountability and Resource Planning Budget Model attributes enrolment grants to each Faculty (academic unit) based on its total WGU's.
