Faculty employees at York University are employees who are engaged in academic employment in one of the 11 Faculties (see Faculty (academic unit)). At York University, faculty are affiliated with bargaining units. 

Employees appointed to York University in either the Professorial or Alternate Stream are members of the York University Faculty Association (“YUFA”), except in the case of Osgoode Hall Law School. Exemptions from the bargaining unit, referred to as YUFA-exempt roles, apply for administrative appointments listed under Appendix A Bargaining Unit Inclusions/Exclusions of the YUFA Collective Agreement. Some examples of YUFA-exempt roles include President; Dean; Associate Dean; Associate Vice-Presidents Research; etc. 

Employees holding appointments as full-time faculty members of Osgoode Hall Law School, and/or holding full-time contractually limited term academic appointments and/or holding full-time non-tenured or non-tenure track continuing appointments as faculty members of Osgoode Hall Law School are members of the Osgoode Hall Faculty Association (“OHFA”). Exemptions from the bargaining unit, referred to as OHFA-exempt roles, apply for administrative appointments listed under Article I, Recognition. Some examples of OFA-exempt roles include the Dean; Associate Deans; etc.

Instructional employees employed in part-time teaching, demonstrating, tutoring or marking, who are not registered at the University as full-time graduate students are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Unit 2 (“CUPE Unit-2”), with some exceptions as noted in Article 3.01 – Employees Represented of the CUPE Unit-2 Collective Agreement.

Instructional employees registered at the University as full-time graduate students employed in part-time teaching, demonstrating, tutoring or marking are members of the CUPE Unit-1.
