A rank is a level of progression among tenure stream and contractually limited full-time university scholars. Rank is part of York University's recognition of a scholar's real achievements and is associated with seniority within the University. In keeping with the University’s commitment to foster a climate of respect for equity and diversity, standards for tenure and promotion through the ranks must recognize research and professional contributions in an equitable way.

Examples of ranks are lecturer or full professor.
