Tenure is a continuing appointment without term, granted to a university scholar. This appointment may be terminated only through resignation, retirement, dismissal for cause, or lay-off for reasons of financial necessity.

Tenure exists to protect the scholar’s right to pursue and communicate knowledge and express opinions in an atmosphere free of reprisal. The University maintains its right to entrust its institutional life to its best university scholars.
