Self-Identifier

Self-Identifier

Synonym(s): N/A

A self-identifier is a type of element within the demographic profile. This information is collected through a voluntary questionnaire in which the respondent identifies with a group of people. Self-identification data is personal information.

Students may have access to specific services as a result of their self-identification, such as:

  • Support services, workshops and programming
  • Scholarships, bursaries (see bursary) and funding opportunities
  • Events of interest
  • Opportunities for engagement and connection with relevant Student Associations

York University strives to use current, relevant, inclusive and affirming language. In particular, the terms used by the University aim to be as specific and descriptive as possible, but we recognize there are limitations to language. Not everyone will self-identify with the terms used to refer to groups of people. We also acknowledge that there is rich diversity and difference within and across communities.

Self-identification information of both employees and students falls under the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy of the Division of Equity, People and Culture at York University. Self-identification is voluntary and treated as confidential information by York University.
