An equity-deserving group is a community or group of people who, due to systematic discrimination, face barriers that prevent them from having the same access to resources and opportunities available to other members of society. These barriers are not merely individual or isolated incidents but are entrenched in societal norms and can be attitudinal, historical, social, or environmental. They may relate to age, ethnicity, disability, economic status, gender, Indigeneity, religion, nationality, ‘race’, sexual orientation, or transgender status. Equity-deserving groups not only identify these systemic barriers to equal access but also actively engage in dismantling these structures and advocate for social justice.
