Michael Gervers is Professor of History at the University of Toronto. He has worked in Ethiopia since 1982 and made annual field trips from 2000 to 2020 to document its architectural, ecclesiastical and manuscript heritage. He publishes regularly on Ethiopian material culture, particularly rock-hewn and built architecture, and textiles. He raised sufficient funding to endow two courses on the teaching of Ge’ez at the University of Toronto, the only university in North America to do so on a regular basis. He is the co-founder of Mazgaba Seelat, an on-line database of Ethiopian art and culture, and is presently co-editor of a major study on the church of Yemrehanna Krestos (Lasta region of North Wollo, Ethiopia).
