Joan Judge (History)
Joan Judge was awarded a York-Massey Visiting Scholarship to spend her 2018–19 sabbatical at Massey College, an independent college situated on the University of Toronto campus. During her tenure at Massey, Joan will finalize her SSHRC-funded book project, In Search of the Chinese Common Reader: Usable Knowledge and Wondrous Ignorance in the Age of Global Science, 1890–1955. Colin P. McGuire (University College Cork)
Colin P. McGuire’s latest article, published in Ethnomusicology Forum 27 (1), analyzes the most famous song in kung fu cinema, Wong Fei-hung’s theme, “General’s Ode”. He argues that this theme song is an unofficial, transnational, Cantonese anthem. His article, “Unisonance in kung fu film music, or the Wong Fei-hung theme song as a Cantonese transnational anthem,” is available open-access thanks to funding from the Irish Research Council. Jean Michel Montsion (Multidisciplinary Studies)
Congratulations to Jean Michel Montsion on his appointment as Acting Director (2018–19), Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies! Jean Michel also recently published his article “Ethnography and International Relations: Situating Recent Trends, Debates and Limitations from an Interdisciplinary Perspective.” The article explores interdisciplinary commonalities in the use of ethnographic methods and ways to enrich current usage in International Relations. The article was published in the Journal of Chinese Sociology 5 (9). The work included in the article was originally presented in the York-Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Workshop last August. Shyam Ranganathan (Philosophy)
Congratulations to Shyam Ranganathan on the publication of his new book, Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation (New York: Routledge). In his book, Shyam explores Hinduism and the distinction between the secular and religious on a global scale. The book offers an original and fresh diagnosis of studying Hinduism, colonialism and a global rise of hyper-nationalism as well as the frequent acrimony between scholars and practitioners of Hindu traditions. Laura Schoenberger (Geography)
Congratulations to Laura Schoenberger on being awarded a 2018 Banting Fellowship! Laura will work with Melissa Marschke at the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa. Her postdoctoral work will build on her doctoral work on land grabbing and property formation in Cambodia by shifting attention to sand extraction in Southeast Asia as part of a project titled, “Sand Grabbing: Disentangling Land, Water and Sand to Reveal New Struggles for Territory.
Sharada Srinivasan (University of Guelph)
Sharada Srinivasan’s special section in the latest issue of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies 39 (3) focuses on sex selection among Canadian Punjabis. The articles in the special section look at son preference in the diaspora, with Sharada’s article bringing a transnational analysis to the phenomenon. Call for Submissions | Tamil Studies Symposiym 2018 | Deadline: 20 September 2018
‘Tamilness’ has been described in turn as an ethnic identity, a linguistic identity, a secular one, a nationalist identity, and as one growing out of a resistance to various forms of oppressive or colonial collectivizations. These pluralities of construction and imaginings of Tamil identity present us with possibilities of intervention in the rigidities and sameness that is normalized in contemporary paradigms of nation-state oriented geopolitics. Grounded in these notions of intervention, the fourth annual Tamil Studies Symposium poses the questions: Can Tamil identity be imagined outside contemporary culture consumption? How does Tamil consciousness productively exceed the limitations of capital and nation-state models? How do Tamils lay the groundwork for mobilizing collectives, and form stable relationships across communities in systemic transformations? As Tamil identity becomes branded through various forms of social media, what forms do these consumable images and narratives take and why? How do critical discourses emerging in Tamil Studies in the present engage with solidarities with other marginalized, minoritized identities?
We invite graduate student scholars to submit abstracts (250 words for papers, or five minutes for film or music submissions). Submissions must be accompanied by a short bio (150 words). Call for Participants | Taiwan Studies Workshop | Deadline: 30 September 2018
The Research Chair in Taiwan Studies at the University of Ottawa is organizing a workshop for young scholars who do research related to Taiwan. Tentatively, this event will take place in early November 2018. Students at all levels are welcome and the research need not be finalized or advanced. The purpose of this event is to share a mutual interest in Taiwan. Participating students in Canada from outside of Ottawa will receive an allowance that will cover the price of travel, at reasonable fares, and accommodations for two nights. The organizers are planning to have a well-known expert on Taiwanese affairs to give a keynote for the event. The Canada Research Chair in the Political Economy of Gender & Work, Dr. Leah F. Vosko, and the Closing the Enforcement Gap Research Partnership are pleased to announce a competition for up to two (2) Post-Doctoral Visitor (PDV) positions tenable in the Gender & Work unit at York University for one year with the possibility of renewal. The PDVs will receive an annual salary of $47,802, office space at York University, use of a computer and full access to York University libraries. They will be supervised by Professor Leah F. Vosko and will work closely with lead community and university-based researchers as well graduate and undergraduate students. Partnership Grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through shared resources as evidenced by cash and/or in-kind contributions. Call for Participants | Future Challenges consultation with CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC and the Canada Foundation for Innovation
Canada’s three research granting agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, are seeking your expertise to help prioritize which future challenges identified through a recent horizon scan are considered most important for Canada. Outcomes from this consultation may also be leveraged to support the priorities of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee, notably to advance efforts in identifying key emerging research areas. Stakeholders from all four agencies are invited to participate in this consultation. Building upon the success of SSHRC’s 2014 Imagining Canada’s Future initiative, we partnered with Policy Horizons Canada, a federal centre of foresight expertise, to undertake a horizon scan as a first step in identifying future challenges for Canada over the next 10 to 15 years. The scan has identified 16 future challenges with the potential to shape society in profound ways, and which are all multi-disciplinary and require broad collaboration to address.
We ask that you select one top challenge, and explore its possible impacts through a brief survey. Beyond the 16 challenges identified in the horizon scan, you have the opportunity to identify additional challenges deemed critical to Canada’s future. By taking part in our brief prioritization exercise,using the Futurescaper crowdsourcing tool, you will help to identify which challenges to consider for possible future programming and/or corporate activities. Once you have reviewed the 16 future challenges, the exercise will take you about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Results of this foresight exercise will be available by spring 2019. Opportunity | Mitacs Globalink Research Award | Deadlines vary
Mitacs is accepting applications for its competitive international research funding opportunity. The Mitacs Globalink Research Award funds collaborations between senior undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at a university overseas. The objective is to offer senior undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 12-to-24 week research projects supervised by professors at accredited universities in the following Mitacs partner countries: Australia, Brazil, China, EU member countries (in France, both universities, India Research Centres are eligible as host institutions), India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, United Kingdom and United States. Approved recipients will receive funds to support student travel and accommodation expenses, research-related expenses, and student stipend.
