Harkiran Singh (she/her) is a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology at York University, with an MA from Western University in Sociology, and a BA from the University of Toronto in a double-major of Criminology and English. During her MA, Harkiran primarily focused on the social integration of diverse immigrants in Canada and the factors affecting post-migration experiences, including source-country attributes and place of settlement. More particularly, her MA research paper focuses on cultural orientation backgrounds as a factor influencing social interaction and connectedness with Canadians. Currently, Harkiran is specificizing her research to explore the intersectional struggles of South Asian immigrant women in Canada who are survivors of intimate partner violence, converging topics of race, gender, migration, integration and culture. She hopes to contribute to current knowledge on the perspectives of these women with the goal to inform policy and shape settlement services. Outside of academia, Harkiran is involved in various associations, including involvement with women’s shelters as well as some research activities.
