Shreya Sangai is a PhD student in the Department of Humanities. In her doctoral research, she intends to study transnational representations of war and the resulting trauma in comics from/about India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Beirut, Palestine, and Syria. Before coming to York University, she completed two Masters degrees in English from India and the US. She was a research fellow in University Grants Commission funded project, “Narrative, Public Culture, and Visuality in Indian Comic Strips and Graphic Novels in English, Hindi, Bangla and Malayalam (1947–present).” In the two years of this fellowship, she studied the persisting discriminatory representations of Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims in Hindi and English comics. Her other areas of interest are state-sponsored violence, debilitation of bodies and dismembering of memories in conflict zones, forced displacement, and memorialization of pain.
