I teach social work at York University. Before my academic career, I worked as a community organizer and a human rights advocate in some of the most diverse and dynamic world cities, namely Hong Kong, New York City, Montréal and Toronto. In Toronto, I have sat on the boards of multiple community groups and citizen committees like Chinese Canadian National Council, Urban Alliance on Race Relations, Safe School Policy Review Taskforce of Toronto District School Board, and Alternative Planning Group. I am currently a co-chair of Asian Canadian Labour Alliance. As an activist researcher, my scholarship focuses on bridging the gap between grassroots organizing and post-structural ideas of resistance and solidarity building. My publications interrogate some of the most contentious issues like indigenization of social work in China, transnational solidarity in Chinese diasporas, reconfiguration of Chinese identity, and community engaged action research. I have served as a reviewer and/ or editorial committee member for local and international journals including Action Research Journal, China Journal of Social Work, Canadian Social Work Review and others.
