Research is focused on understanding how proteins function at the structural level. We employ a variety of methods, including protein X-ray crystallography, molecular biology, and other biophysical methods. Detailed knowledge of a protein’s three-dimensional structure provides insight into how the protein functions, or does not function, in its biological role. Structural information also provides a framework for altering the protein’s function through protein engineering or, in the case of drug targets, structurally based drug design and modification.
