Campus security reminder

Voir la version française

The Community Safety Department (CSD) is asking for the community’s assistance related to the maintenance of a safe and secure campus environment.

Campus Safety staff have been addressing challenges recently related to the unauthorized use of campus spaces. Safety and security are a shared responsibility, and addressing these challenges thoroughly requires a collective effort. CSD would like to remind anyone responsible for office spaces, classroom spaces or doors that should be locked after hours to remember to:

  • Close and lock all classrooms and personal office spaces when you are finished using them.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour, including unauthorized access to closed spaces, to the CSD immediately.

Reporting suspicious behaviour

If you notice any suspicious behaviour, or someone accessing a space without authorization, follow these steps:

  1. Stay safe: do not approach or confront the individual.
  2. Contact CSD: call the Community Safety Department at 416-650-8000 or use the York U Safety App to report the incident.
  3. Provide details: give a clear description of the individual(s) and the behaviour you observed, including the location and time.
  4. Follow up: if you feel comfortable, follow up with CSD to provide any additional information that might be helpful.

Additional notes on campus safety

To further enhance safety, the Community Safety Department has implemented a range of measures, including:

  • Routine patrols: staff conduct regular patrols of campus spaces to identify and address security concerns.
  • CCTV monitoring: staff are monitoring areas for potential safety concerns 24-7.
  • Campus awareness events: ongoing efforts to educate the community about personal safety and crime prevention through tabling events, workshops and by request.
  • Collaboration with internal partners: the Community Safety Department works closely with Facilities and academic departments to ensure proper maintenance of locks, doors and security systems.

Partnering for a safer campus

The Community Safety Department appreciates the active participation of the campus community in making York University a safe space for everyone to work, learn and grow. Together, we can create an environment where safety is a shared priority.
