The York Centre for Asian Research has created a Professional Development Fund to subsidize its Graduate Associates’ travel costs to present their scholarly or creative work. Amounts awarded will range from $50 to $500 with the expectation that they will be used in conjunction with other awards.

The next deadline is 16 January 2014 for activities taking place in the following 12 months.
Applications are reviewed and allocations determined by the Awards Committee of the York Centre for Asian Research.

+ YCAR Graduate Associates are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applications from students registered in the Graduate Diploma in Asian Studies.
+ Students must be Graduate Associates on the date of application and the date of presentation.
+ Registration and transportation expenses necessary to present scholarly or creative work at recognized events, e.g., conferences, colloquia, poster presentations and exhibitions.
+ Disability accommodation costs (e.g., attendant care, medical equipment costs, accessible transportation, interpreters, note takers)
+ Expenses must be incurred within six (6) months after the application.
Amount of Allocations
Allocation amounts may vary based on the amount of applications and the number of high-expense applications in any given application cycle.
Successful applications will be allocated a portion rather than the total amount of transportation costs, between C$50 and C$500. Students are expected to use the most economical option available and are encouraged to seek other sources of funding.
Regardless of event dates, the maximum number of allocations provided in a given academic year is one (1) per graduate student.
+The applicant completes, prints and signs the application form; if a field does not apply, it is indicated by marking “N/A”.
+ The applicant submits the completed application form to YCAR with:
- Call for papers/submissions
- Confirmation/proof of event acceptance (communication from event organizers, event program announcing the applicant’s participation in a session or exhibition, et cetera)
- short statement explaining the importance of the conference/meeting for the student's professional development
- short statement of other sources of funding applied for, or awarded
- Supervisor’s statement and signature
- Specific travel details, including place of departure and destination, mode of transportation, estimated cost of transportation, et cetera.
Completed and signed paper applications must be received by YCAR (834 Kaneff Tower) before 4pm on the deadline date.
Applicants are strongly advised to complete the application well in advance of the deadline to give adequate time to obtain the required signature and comments from their supervisor. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
The notification of award(s) will be made within one month after the deadline.
Awarded fund are made available to the awardee as reimburseable expenses. The awardee must produce appropriate receipts and other related documentation to receive the awarded funds.
