Working with Narrative in Emotion-focused Therapy - May 3, 2013

In therapy as in life, all significant emotions are embedded in important stories, and all  significant stories revolve around important emotional themes.  Building on clinical insights and research findings emerging  from their intensive investigation of  narrative and emotion processes in treatments of depression,  Lynne Angus & Les Greenberg's (2011) recent book- Working with narrative in Emotion-focussed Therapy : Healing stories, changing lives (APA Press) - provides clinicians with effective treatment strategies to facilitate both emotion and narrative change in productive therapy sessions.  In this workshop, Lynne Angus will provide  clinical/ video examples of  how to identify and effectively work with specific  narrative -emotion problem markers -- such as  same old stories, empty stories and unstoried emotion--  for the facilitation of productive narrative disclosure, emotional engagement and  personal meaning making in therapy sessions.  Importantly, the identification of strength-based  narrative-emotion markers indicating client readiness for change - such as competing plot line stories, discovery stories and unexpected outcome stories - will also be  addressed and key strategies for enhancing client change processes identified in the context of video tape examples. Drawing on a diverse range of clinical treatment approaches (Emotion-focused, Cognitive Therapy, Client-centred and Motivational Interviewing) and clinical disorders (Depression, Anxiety and Trauma), this workshop will be of  interest to therapists who have worked primarily  in either a  narrative or emotion-focused therapy approach and would now like to explore how to more fully integrate the power of both narrative and emotion strategies in treatment sessions, as well  practitioners who would like to  learn more about the contributions of both client narrative disclosure/story telling and emotion processes for effective treatment outcomes.
