Day 3

A FESI first! 

On day 3, we will engage in a community viewing of “Pushout-  The Criminalization Of Black Girls In Schools”, a feature length documentary which takes a close look at the educational, judicial and societal disparities facing Black Girls. As stated on the documentary’s website, inspired by the groundbreaking book of the same name by renowned scholar, Monique W. Morris, Ed.D the documentary confronts the ways in which the misunderstanding of Black girlhood has led to excessive punitive discipline which in turn disrupts one of the most important factors in their lives, their education. 

Join us after the viewing of the documentary to engage in a fulsome conversation led by Success Beyond Limits (SBL) to discuss the relevance of this documentary to the Canadian context. Success Beyond Limits is a collaborative, youth-led, community based movement that provides youth with holistic supports to complete their education and experience success in their lives. The work of the organization is deeply connected to the community York University is a part of, and we are overjoyed to have them lead this conversation at FESI 2021. 

Co-Directors Mohamed Ahmed and Tesfai Mengesha and a panel of SBL students will help us to unpack this documentary to think about its relevant themes in a Canadian context, and to discuss the critical need for RESTRUCTURING our current mindsets and processes in education. They will then share effective processes to respond to students in their own programming to help us to start REIMAGINING more equitable futures for Ontario students.
