Diploma in Teaching English as an International Language (D-TEIL)
Make a difference around the world in a growing professional field. Gain the flexibility to live abroad and learn about other cultures with a career in the international field of English language teaching. In this program, you will be introduced to general principles of applied linguistics and language teaching, the latest ideas of in-person and online language learning, concepts of language in society and bi/plurilingualism, and the history and impact of English as a global language. Plus, in every course, you'll find a hands-on education component, including a three-week international teaching practicum in one of our partner universities in Brazil or Colombia.

Hands-on experiences
Apply the concepts and theories you're studying to real world challenges. Engage in guided practical experiences in the classroom, workplace, community and abroad. The following are some opportunities available to D-TEIL students.
- Complete a three-week teaching practicum in Brazil or Colombia as part of Teaching English as an International Language
- Immerse yourself in the experience of teaching English as an international language to students with a different linguistic and cultural background.
- Live and work internationally.
Courses & Curriculum
Throughout the program, you'll find a curriculum that offers an in-depth and balanced approach to Teaching English as an International Language, with courses that include The Nuts & Bolts of English: Grammar for Teaching & Learning and Learning English as a Second Language.
Admission Requirements
- Be enrolled at Glendon or another faculty of York University OR have completed a university degree at an accredited institution.
- Not every course is offered every year. Please refer to the current offerings on this website.
- The course EN 4596 9.0 is only open to Certificate Students, and only to those who have achieved a grade of at least B in each of the Certificate courses taken prior to entering EN 4596.
- It is strongly recommended that all Certificate students acquire at least a basic working knowledge of the language of your practicum country (so: Latin American Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese) prior to participating in EN 4596 and its international practicum. This could be accomplished by taking six credits in a foundational course at Glendon.
