Position Overview
As a Deal Sourcing Student Placement, you will support the initial stage of the acquisition pipeline by identifying potential targets, conducting preliminary research, and preparing deal materials. Working closely with senior members of the Ako Capital team, you will gain hands on exposure to lower mid market M&A, preliminary due diligence, and investor communications.
This role is designed exclusively for undergraduate Business and Economics students at Glendon College who are seeking practical experience in transaction execution and value creation.
Potential Responsibilities
- Conduct market and sector research to identify potential acquisition targets in manufacturing, building services, and infrastructure services
- Build and maintain target company databases, including key financial, operational, and ownership metrics
- Analyze financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements) and summarize key trends and red flags
- Develop financial models in Excel to assess valuation ranges, returns profiles, and basic transaction structures
- Draft sections of investment memos, including company overviews, market summaries, and preliminary diligence findings
- Assist in the creation of transaction documents, including non-binding offers (LOIs), diligence checklists, and data request lists
- Conduct industry and comparable company research using public sources and commercial databases
- Support internal knowledge building efforts, including sector notes, process documentation, and template development
Your Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Business or Economics program at Glendon College
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, PivotTables, basic modeling)
- Solid understanding of financial statements and corporate finance concepts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and professionalism
- Demonstrated initiative, problem solving ability, and comfort working in a fast paced, unstructured environment
- Experience with case competitions, capstone projects, or relevant coursework is an asset
- Familiarity with data sources such as Bloomberg, IBISWorld or similar platforms is an asset
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the placement

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
This placement will be divided in 3 blocks – learning about the industry, managing group benefit plans and generating new business (theory, knowledge & understanding, application). Included will be carrier presentations (Manulife, Sunlife, Canada Life, Blue Cross etc. to name a few).
Placement's Overview
This placement will take place from January to April 2027 (100 hours)
- 6.25 hours a week, each student works together on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 PM - 4 PM.
- Daily work is scheduled for 1-hour blocks. Depending on the day, some blocks may have more hours.
- Block 1 prospecting (cold/warm calls targeting local businesses and specific industries, using AI)

Over the course of each project, you will gather and analyze information, formulate and test hypotheses, and develop and communicate recommendations to business stakeholders.
Your Responsibilities:
To give you an idea of what to expect as a Strategy Analyst intern, here are a few project examples:
- Analyzing trends in fraudulent credit card applications and transactions in order to enhance our suite of models and tools. The goal: reduce fraud costs and minimize negative experiences for our cardholders.
- Developing a framework through which customers may benefit from having a different card than the one they currently have. The goal: enhancing the overall value provided to the customer while being mindful of the additional costs and credit risk associated with different products.
- Building a challenger model to an existing model that predicts how much customers are likely to spend on their credit cards. The goal: understanding if a simpler model could capture enough of the business value to justify retiring the complex model.

Basic Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from an accredited University with an expected graduation date in or after December 2027.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree/master's degree in Commerce, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field
- Superior analytical and problem-solving skills. If you know how to code in Python, SQL or other programming languages, that’s awesome. If not, don’t worry - we’ll teach you.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to adapt in a dynamic, ever-changing environment; being flexible and open to new ideas and requirements that will enable you to thrive.
