Admission Requirements

Preparing your application to graduate studies at York University and/or other interested universities requires research and planning. Some students start preparing their plans for graduate studies as early as two years before they submit their application. Consider the following information below to help guide you through a successful application process.

Graduates with an honours degree or equivalent in astronomy, physics, or engineering physics from a recognized university may be admitted as Candidates for the M.Sc. degree if they attained at least B+ standing (or at least second-class honours from a United Kingdom university). Applicants holding such a degree but for which a deficiency is evident in critical areas of background preparation may be required to register in appropriate courses at the senior undergraduate level to raise their qualifications to the minimum admission level. Other requirements expected of students applying for graduate studies at York University are summarized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Graduates with a bachelor's degree in engineering or with an honours BSc degree in physics or astronomy may be considered for admission to a program leading to the PhD degree. However, such graduates must first register as candidates for the MSc degree and are required, before completing the doctoral program, to demonstrate capability in several core areas of the Physics and Astronomy Graduate Program. These areas depend on the research area of the student. If their progress is satisfactory, they may be transferred after one year into the PhD program and advance in status to the candidate (PhD I) on the recommendation of their research supervisor and the Program Director.

Graduates with a master's degree in physics, astronomy, or engineering physics from a recognized university may be admitted directly as candidates (PhD I) into a program leading to the PhD degree.
