How to Apply

Applications to the Graduate Program in Theatre, Dance, & Performance Studies must be completed online. You can find further information on the requirements and links to the online application form on the Faculty of Graduate Studies site under  Graduate Admissions.

Late domestic applications for the MA & PhD programs in Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies will be considered, but please note that the Graduate Executive Committee will begin reviewing files immediately after the January 15th deadline.

To apply for graduate studies at York University, you must complete the Application for Graduate Admission, including payment of the $140 (Canadian) application fee. The application fee is non-refundable and is payable via Visa or MasterCard.

Official Transcripts

At the time of application, you may upload an unofficial transcript (such as a PDF copy from your student account). This will allow your application to be assessed.

If you are offered admission, it will typically be on a conditional basis until your final, official transcripts are received. Official transcripts must be issued directly by the institution through MyCreds (or an equivalent secure digital platform) and sent to York University.

If your institution does not use MyCreds, official transcripts must be provided in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution and mailed or couriered directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

Via MyFile you can upload the following required supporting documentation:

  • Statement of Interest (2-3 pages) outlining your background in theatre, dance, and/or performance studies; your reasons for wanting to pursue an advanced degree; and how you intend to fulfill the degree requirements. For PhD students, please include a description of your proposed dissertation project, identifying the faculty who might supervise you.
  • Curriculum Vitae outlining your work experience, performance experience, academic background, publications, awards, etc.
  • Writing sample of 1,500-2,000 words (for MA applicants) and 2,500-3,000 words (for PhD applicants). Acceptable formats include an academic essay, thesis chapter, conference paper, or other piece of academic writing. In addition to the writing sample, applicants may opt to submit research in another format, including, but not limited, to: a video presentation of no more than 5 minutes in length; a brief excerpt from a script or creative writing project (no more than 10 pages); a design portfolio; other multimodal research materials.
  • Contact information for two references. Entering your contact information will generate an electronic form that will be emailed to your referees for completion. Please note that the link will expire after two weeks. If you need the link to be resent, contact gradthea@yorku.ca.

Note for International Applicants: There are currently no funded positions. Should you still wish to apply, you will be considered for a non-funded position during the duration of the program.
