How to Apply

Applications to the Graduate Program in Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies must be completed online. You can find further information on the requirements and links to the online application form on the Faculty of Graduate Studies site under  Graduate Admissions.

Late domestic applications for the MA & PhD programs in Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies will be considered, but please note that the Graduate Executive Committee will begin reviewing files immediately after the January 15th deadline.

  • To apply for graduate studies at York University, you must complete the Application for Graduate Admission including payment of the $130 (Canadian) application fee. The application fee is non-refundable and is payable via Visa or MasterCard.
  • At the time of application, you may submit scanned copies of your transcripts. If you are accepted, it will be under the condition that you submit official transcripts. Transcripts must be in sealed envelopes from the issuing institutions, and should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

Seventy-two (72) business hours after you have submitted your application for graduate admission, you will receive an e-mail providing you with access to MyFile, where you can upload your supporting documentation. If you do not receive this e-mail, please contact gradthea@yorku.ca for assistance.

Via MyFile you can upload the following required supporting documentation:

  • Statement of Interest (2-3 pages): Clearly articulate your research interests in theatre, Dance, and performance studies. Your statement should outline your background in theatre, dance, and/or performance studies; your reasons for wanting to pursue an advanced degree; and how you intend to fulfill the degree requirements. PhD applicants: Where possible, please include a description of your proposed dissertation project, identifying the faculty who might supervise you.
  • Curriculum Vitae outlining your work experience, performance experience, academic background, publications, awards, etc.
  • Writing sample of no more than 25 pages, e.g. academic essay, thesis chapter. Please avoid submitting creative writing samples or course syllabi.
  • Contact information for three references (entering contact information will generate and send by e-mail an electronic form for your referees to complete.  The link expires after two weeks; please contact either gradthea@yorku.ca or  fgsnews@yorku.ca to have the link re-sent).

*Please note that all decisions will be communicated via email. You can view the status of your application via MyFile.  Also, note that a faculty supervisor is not required in order to apply.
