Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries

There are limited scholarships and bursaries available to international students who are currently enrolled at York University. Review the available funding for international students and apply for all that you qualify for. In order to be considered for many of York’s scholarships, bursaries and on-campus employment programs, you must complete and submit your Student Profile on York's Financial Aid, Awards and Scholarships (FAAS) ApplicationPlease read below for more information about financial support for international students.

International Student Funding

The Student Profile is part of the Financial Aid, Awards and Scholarships (FAAS) Application, which is a system that York uses to help match students with awards they are eligible for. You should complete the profile at the start of each academic session (once for Fall-Winter and once for Summer) to be considered for a variety of programs. Your will be asked to log in with your Passport York account to complete and submit your Student Profile.

Awards and Bursaries available to International Undergraduate Students at York include:

  • Entrance Scholarships
  • York University Continuing Student Scholarship
  • International Undergraduate Student Bursary
  • Limited financial supports and resources for international students

The International Student Emergency Bursary is available for international students experiencing an unexpected specific, urgent and temporary financial emergency. The Bursary is not intended to support tuition fees and other expected or ongoing financial needs. To be considered for this bursary, students must meet all eligibility criteria listed below and submit a bursary application by the relevant deadlines listed below.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must:

  1. Currently be registered and active in an undergraduate or graduate program at York University.
  2. Be an international student with a valid study permit, paying international tuition fees.
  3. Be currently enrolled in a full-time course load (9.0 credits).
  4. Have completed the Financial Aid, Awards, and Scholarships App prior to applying for emergency support.
  5. Have exhausted all other sources of financial support such as family support, savings, loans, work, etc.
  6. Submit a completed bursary application by the posted deadline(s) below, including appropriate supporting documentation.

Application Deadlines

Summer 2026: July 24, 2026
Fall 2026: November 15, 2026
Winter 2027: March 15, 2027

This bursary does not support:

  • The cost of international tuition fees and outstanding student fees.
  • Recurring or ongoing expenses such as:
    • Rent payments
    • Utility bills
    • Regular transportation costs
  • Higher cost of living due to de-valued international currency.
  • Non-urgent or non-emergency related issues.
  • Ongoing or anticipated future hardship; international student must currently be in an emergency at the time of application.

Bursary Award:

  • These are one-time awards; students can only receive this emergency bursary once through the academic year (i.e. May 2026 to April 2027).
  • Emergency bursaries will range up to $1000 per student.

Application Process:

Processing and Decisions: 

  • We strive to review and assess bursary applications twice a month.
  • Please allow 10-15 business days for your application to be reviewed.
  • Students will be notified of successful decisions by email after their application has been reviewed by York International, up to 15 business days. 
  • Only successful bursary recipients will receive an email notification.

Payment: 

  • Successful bursary recipients will see their emergency bursary posted to their Online Student Account.
  • Automatic refund requests will be made to ensure recipients receive their bursary funds as quickly as possible.
  • To ensure a timely process, students must update their Banking Information with the university, by clicking on “create or update my banking information” on the Student Financial Services website.
  • Those who do not have direct deposit enabled will receive a physical cheque in the mail. This is a slower process than direct deposit, so we encourage you to update your banking information.

Graduate International Student Funding

The Faculty of Graduate Studies website lists a number of scholarships, bursaries, and other awards available to graduate students. Graduate students may also be eligible for the International Student Emergency Bursary.
