
York University places in top 75 global universities for key subjects in latest Shanghai Ranking
TORONTO, Dec. 4, 2025 – York University continues to excel on the world stage with the latest ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which puts York in the top 75 in the world for four subjects.
York’s aerospace engineering (space engineering) is not only 32nd in the world, but number one in Canada. In addition, business administration, finance, geography, psychology and sociology are all in the top five in Canada.
Psychology, business administration, geography and aerospace engineering are all in the top 75, with sociology in the top 100, across the globe. The Shanghai Ranking looked at more than 2,500 universities out of about 5,000 worldwide and only published results for best 1,000 universities, including York.

The Shanghai Ranking, also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, bills its ranking methodology as transparent and objective third-party data with a focus on high-impact research.
Many of York’s subject areas increased significantly in the Shanghai Ranking nationally and globally in the last few years, including mathematics, physics, sociology, geography and psychology.
This builds on York’s strong performance from the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, which looked at more than 1,700 from 100 countries. Across Canada, the University has 15 subject areas in the top 10. York is ranked sixth in Canada and second in Ontario for the arts and humanities, and in the top 100 worldwide for English language and literature. York also ranked in the top 10 in Ontario for mathematics, physics and astronomy, medicine, chemistry, mechanical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering.
The Shanghai Ranking results come after York once again placed in the top 40 globally for the 2025 THE Impact Rankings as a Sustainable Development Goals leader.
In addition, in the Maclean’s 2026 University Rankings York placed in the top five as one of the best comprehensive universities in Canada. The University has for years consistently ranked in the top five.
