The Fields-NSERC “Math for Real” Program

Title: “Math for Real: High School Math Solves Real Problems”

Date: Mar 12, 2018 – Mar 14, 2018

Location:  Room 230, The Fields Institute, 222 College Street, Toronto, On, M5T 3J1 MAP

Sponsored by the Fields Institute of Mathematics and NSERC PromoScience

Description: Math modeling links classroom knowledge in mathematics and computer science to solve real problems in everyday life. It engages students in mathematical reasoning, creative problem solving and team working. We believe that students benefit greatly if they learn at an early age that how exciting and valuable it is to apply mathematics to real world problems.

As the 3rd International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IM2C) is coming, we hold the three-day “Math for Real” workshop to help students gain confidence in the competition.  Although the Workshop is intended for students in Grades 9-12, teachers are also welcome to attend. Participants will have an inspiring experience in modeling, programming, technical writing, and team-building. At the end of the workshop, the participants will walk through the process via a mini mock contest. In addition, plenary talks on math modeling given by professors will take you to unexpected places.

Registration fee:

  • $50 per participant (lunches included, spaces limited).
  • Students with financial needs can apply for fee waiver if a letter of support from your teacher is provided
