Campus Network Upgrade

The Campus Network Upgrade Project, scheduled to commence in May 2024 and continue over the next few years, represents a comprehensive initiative spanning York University's Keele, Glendon and all remote campuses. Its primary objective is to modernize the existing fleet of networking switches and wireless access points across both academic and administrative buildings. Key goals include upgrading outdated hardware that is no longer supported, enhancing network capabilities and implementing cutting-edge Wi-Fi 6E technology.

The wireless upgrade addresses increasing demand for high performance and secure mobile connectivity to support learning, teaching and research. For more information on Wi-Fi 6E, watch this 2 minute video.

As each building is upgraded, the following service enhancements will be achieved:

• Increased Speeds: Both inter and intra-buildling connections will utilize 25G speeds, while individual port capability will range from 1G up to 10G.
• Enhanced reliability and redundancy: Dual divergent uplinks back to the network distribution/core as well as downstream to access switches will ensure resliency in the event of failures.
• Introduction of 6GHz Wi-Fi: New Wi-Fi spectrum means reduced interference, faster speeds and an improved overall user experience.
• Improved wireless coverage, capacity and quality of service: Redesigned Wi-Fi access point distribution with the aim of ensuring consistent and high-performing mobile service.

The Campus Network Upgrade will be executed in a phased approach, commencing with academic buildings.

On-site activities will be conducted across all buildings as part of this initiative. During this period, it is essential to anticipate scheduled service interruptions affecting both wired and wireless network access within each building. Significant effort will be made to minimize service disruptios. Timely communications will be shared in advance to notify stakeholders of the planned work.
