Personal Devices And Accessories

Description

Personal devices and accessories can be used with existing Classroom Technology. Supported personal devices include Presentation Remotes with Laser Pointers, network cables, audio cables, and VGA cables.

How do I get it

Course instructors (or department admin assistants) can purchase personal devices and accessories conveniently at the Data Integrity store in York Lanes, or via Sm@rtBuy.

Please note that we can only assist with supported personal devices. All other personal devices and accessories can only be supported as a best effort scenario. Please see below for a list of supported personal devices and accessories.

On Sm@rtBuy or Data Integrity (or at any store) you can look for:

  • Kensington Presenter Remote - Red Laser Presenter
  • Kensington Presenter Expert - Green laser with cursor control
    • General Description: More advanced presentation remote with three functions: presentation slide advancer, cursor/mouse control, and green laser pointer (works better for lecture halls especially if you happen to be in a rear projection lecture hall). See details on the vendor's site.
  • Apple Adapter (for VGA)
    • General Description: In order to connect your own Mac laptop to a classroom VGA connection (for video signal), an Apple adapter is needed. See example of Apple adapter (for VGA). For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your adapters from a reputable computer store.
  • Apple Adapter (for HDMI)
    • General Description: In order to connect your own Mac laptop to an HDMI supported classroom (for video and audio signal), an Apple adapter is needed. See example of Apple adapter (for HDMI). For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your adapters from a reputable computer store.
  • HDMI to VGA Adapter
    • General Description: In order to connect your own laptop (that has an HDMI port) to a VGA supported classroom (for video signal), an HDMI to VGA adapter is needed. See example of HDMI to VGA adapter. For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your adapters from a reputable computer store.
  • HDMI cable
    • General Description: In order to connect your own laptop to a classroom HDMI connection, any common HDMI cable in good condition can work. An HDMI cable does the job of carrying both video and audio signals. See example of HDMI cable. Please make sure the length meets your needs. For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your cables from a reputable computer store.
  • VGA cable
    • General Description: In order to connect your own laptop to supported classrooms, any common VGA cable (with a male connector to male connector) in good condition can work. A VGA cable does the job of carrying the image signal from your laptop. See example of VGA cable. Please make sure the length meets your needs. For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your cables from a reputable computer store.
  • Audio cable (3.5 mm connector)
    • General Description: In tandem with the above mentioned VGA cable, in order to connect the sound on your own laptop to supported classrooms, any common audio cable (with a 3.5 mm male connector to male connector) in good condition can work. An audio cable does the job of carrying the audio signal from your laptop. See example of audio cable. Please make sure the length meets your needs. For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your cables from a reputable computer store.
  • Network cable (RJ45 connector)
    • General Description: In order to connect your own laptop to a classroom YorkNet connection, any common network cable (with a RJ45 connector, CAT 5 or CAT 6) in good condition can work. See example of network cable. Please make sure the length meets your needs. For optimal performance we recommend that you obtain your cables from a reputable computer store.
