Event Explores How SDG Localization Can Get 2030 Agenda Back on Track

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) convened a panel discussion on the role of local SDG action in getting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development back on track. The event, held on the margins of the 2023 session of the UN Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), emphasized the importance of local governments as critical agents of change. Summit Explores AI’s Potential to Advance SDGs

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and partners held a summit to discuss the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing global development priorities such as health, climate, gender, inclusive prosperity, and sustainable infrastructure. The AI for Good Global Summit aimed to identify practical AI applications that can support the SDGs and scale those solutions for global impact. The event highlighted both the transformative potential of AI and the need for safeguards to prevent misuse. May 8 Teach In Day: The Right Balance: Teaching and Learning the SDGs Through Collaboration and Connection

In collaboration with the Teaching Commons and in advance of this year’s 11th annual Teaching in Focus conference, the SDGs-in-the-Classroom Community of Practice is delighted to offer our second UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Teach-in Day.

Welcome to Congress at York May 27-June 2

York University is hosting the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, in partnership with the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Congress is the largest academic gathering in Canada, and one of the largest in the world. Together|Ensemble is Canada’s national conference devoted to tracking progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference represents an all-of-society approach to addressing Canada’s toughest sustainable development challenges, bringing together the private sector, academia, government, and civil society.

This year marks the half-way point of the SDGs mandate to 2030. Unfortunately, no country in the world is on track to achieve them completely, with Canada ranking 29th in the world on SDGs implementation. Together Ensemble 2023: Accelerating Learning and Teaching on the SDGs is Canada's national panel discussion devoted to accelerating progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education). The panel represents a whole-of-society approach to addressing Canada’s sustainable development challenges in the field of education, bringing together leaders from Partners for Action, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO), the EdCan Network, The Starfish Canada, and the University of Cambridge.

SDSN Youth AusNZPac is launching a groundbreaking new report, "Towards an AusNZPac Youth SDG Index." The 2023 SDGs Learning, Training, and Practice, an initiative of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA/DSDG) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), is designed to facilitate comprehensive discussions on recovery measures from COVID-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda. This international event engages experts from various sectors to delve into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were most impacted by the pandemic, specifically SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, and 17, thereby addressing global sustainable development challenges.

The aftermath of COVID-19 has further complicated the quest to achieve the SDGs by 2030, and the reality remains that no country has fully realized these goals. Hence, the 2023 event's theme is focused on uncovering alternative strategies to accomplish these goals while promoting global cooperation to expedite recovery from the far-reaching impacts of the pandemic.

Data-Driven Voluntary National and Local Reviews for the SDGs, July 11, 2023

This high-level virtual event, hosted by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the SDGs Today team, invites United Nations Member States to present their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs). These reviews highlight the progress, challenges, and lessons learned while reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national and sub-national levels.

Additionally, the SDSN's SDGs Today team and Esri will introduce the ArcGIS StoryMap template, a tool developed to facilitate the creation of digital, interactive presentations of a VNR or VLR. This event will also showcase innovative data approaches and tools to drive informed SDG policy-making.

The 2023 ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development, July 21-22, 2023

The 2023 ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development, scheduled to be held at Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur, will serve as a platform to resume the strengthening of the ASEAN regional partnership in sustainable development. This process was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop, with a comprehensive program designed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, President of SDSN, aims to empower participants with strategies to accelerate progress on the SDGs and climate actions.

This event will also provide an opportunity to update and affirm national strategies for the SDGs ahead of the 2023 SDG Summit and the 2024 Summit for the Future. Participants can attend in person or watch the event on the SDSN YouTube channel.

The First Regional Consultations on Nature-based Solutions will focus on compiling best practices, proposals, criteria, standards, and guidelines for Nature-based Solutions (NbS), with an emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. The consultations will also discuss options for supporting sustainable investment in NbS and regional perspectives on implementing of NbS. The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on 9 August to honour Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge. The theme for 2023 is ‘Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.’ The day was established by the UN General Assembly in resolution 49/214 and marked the anniversary of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.

New Master’s Pathway in Foundations of Sustainable Development Now Available

The SDG Academy and University College Dublin (UCD) are thrilled to launch the new Master’s Pathway in Foundations of Sustainable Development. This innovative program provides a flexible and accredited pathway to further education in the field of sustainable development. Learners start with the SDG Academy’s Master’s Pathway Professional Certificate on edX, then, upon acceptance, can apply to UCD’s online Professional Diploma in Foundations of Sustainable Development. Successful completion of the Diploma permits continuation into UCD’s online Master’s of Science (MSc.) in Sustainable Development. The SDG Academy edX Professional Certificate will be available starting July 1, 2023, while the UCD Professional Diploma is currently accepting applications for the September 2023 intake.
