The issue of development-induced displacement is a pertinent challenge globally. Yearly, it is estimated that at least 15 million people are displaced due to development. Challenges in this context include insufficient consultation, improper compensation and inadequate resettlement. While there has been discussion of these issues and many recognize the need for solutions, both linked in terms of durable solutions to internal displacement and development-oriented approaches, there is much to be desired with respect to protection and assistance for persons displaced by development projects. Too often the initiation and implementation of projects begin with the premise that certain populations must make compromises for the broader good of the larger population. However, these positions are contrary to human rights protections, sustainable development goals and justice. To help build awareness of this global issue, the Centre for Refugee Studies will be hosting a workshop examining the various intersections of development induced displacement, with the aim of identifying possible solutions at various governance levels.

Opening Keynote: Madam Cecilia Jimenez, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons
