Postdoctoral Fellow — Emergency Management Actions to Address Stigma in Public Health Emergencies: Lessons from COVID-19

The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join the Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) program at York University as a Postdoctoral Researcher. We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to conduct research as part of a CIHR-funded project entitled “Destigmatizing Chinese Communities in the face of COVID-19: Emergency Management Actions to Address Social Vulnerability in Toronto and Nairobi”.

The postdoctoral fellowship has two main aims: 1) to gain understanding on actions that have been taken to address various forms of stigma and misinformation during COVID-19 within the Greater Toronto Area, particular by emergency management and public health professionals, and 2) to better understand the role that emergency management professionals can take to counter various forms of stigma ahead of the next public health emergency.

Position: Postdoctoral Researcher (full-time)
Contract Duration: 12 months (flexible start date but preferably starting March 1, 2024)

Requirements:

• PhD in Disaster Studies, Public Administration, Social Science or related fields - Demonstrated ability to publish English-language research in reputable journals - Strong background in qualitative research methodologies, with experience in conducting interviews and focus groups
• Experience using qualitative software for data analysis
• Ability to work independently and in collaboration with research team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills

Responsibilities:

• Develop a research plan and timeline based on mandates of postdoctoral research position
• Secure approval from York University’s Office of Research Ethics (ORE) for research involving human subjects
• Arrange and conduct interviews and focus groups with emergency management and public health professionals across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
• Analyze data using appropriate software, such as NVivo, to uncover insights and to contribute to existing knowledge base
• Develop at minimum three complete research manuscripts targeted for submission in reputable and relevant journals
• Assist with the completion of the grant final report
• Organize and/or participate in knowledge sharing event(s) given research findings
• Collaborate with fellow researchers on ongoing projects as opportunities arise
• Participate in other program initiatives, such as delivering guest lectures in the DEM program and/or participation in conferences

Compensation commensurate with skillsets. The salary/stipend is in the range of $64,000~69,000 for the duration of the 12-month contract. The postdoctoral researcher will work under the direct supervision of principal applicant Dr. Aaida Mamuji, and with co-applicant Dr. Jack Rozdilsky.
