Opportunity: Junior Developer, Safe Water Optimization Tool
The Safe Water Optimization Tool (SWOT) Project is a joint endeavour of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (DIGHR) at York University and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to build, pilot, and scale a machine learning-enabled web-based tool that will help humanitarian responders ensure that water is safe to drink in crisis zones around the world. The SWOT Project is seeking a part-time developer to support updates, enhancements, and maintaining the SWOT web application and website. Rate: $30/hour + 4% vacation
Hours: P/T approximately 5 to 10 hours per week
Start and End Dates: Feb 10, 2020 to May 11, 2020 (renewable)

Basic Duties and Responsibilities
- Code and test minor enhancements and updates to the SWOT web tool in collaboration with team of open source developers
- Update content on the project webpage
- Manage and query back-end databases and build reports
- User accounts and database management
- Managing DevOps platform
- Work effectively on project teams using agile development practices
- Create applications for extracting, transforming, and storing data from other APIs
- Demonstrate flexibility by acquiring new skills and taking on new tasks Attend team meetings
- Prepare reports and slide decks as required
- Stay in regular contact with supervisors and meet regularly to keep all parties informed.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree or Equivalent in Computer Science or related field
- Prior experience with fullstack web software development using node.js, HTML/CSS/JS and either relational or nosql databases
- Experience with git, Linux, agile/scrum and test-driven development
- Nice to haves: cloud computing (e.g. Azure, AWS), mongo DB, machine learning (using Python or R), Matlab or Octave, DevOps.
Skills & Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills: professional email/phone correspondence, presentation proficiency
- Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds/cultures
- Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets)
- Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and take on initiative
- Interested in developing tech for humanitarian applications
- Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
- Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada
- Preference for candidates who are based in the Greater Toronto Area and are able to work on site and/or attend regular meetings at DIGHR offices, York University Keele Campus
Supervision will be provided by Dr. Syed Imran Ali, DIGHR Fellow in Global Health and Humanitarianism. Some work may take place off-site with regular contact via email, phone, and IM applications (Slack).
