Admission Requirements

Preparing your application to graduate studies at York University and/or other interested universities requires research and planning. Some students start preparing their plan for graduate studies as early as two years before they submit their application. Consider the following information below to help guide you through a successful application process.

Students will be considered for admission as Candidates for the MA degree with at least:

  • an honours degree in English, or its equivalent;
  • a minimum B+ average and at least a B+ in English and Humanities courses in the last two years of study.

Applicants are ranked for consideration; full assessment of an applicant’s file includes careful attention to grades achieved over the first degree, the Statement of Interest, writing sample, and letters of recommendation (see How to Apply). We look at numbers, but we want people who are as imaginative as they are capable.

The normal qualification for admission consideration to the PhD Programme is an MA degree in English or its equivalent with at least a B+ average or higher and undergraduate provisions as required for the Master’s degree. Candidates will be expected to enter with a reasonable knowledge of the full range of studies in English literature and language. Candidates may be required to pass a qualifying examination before admission.

While applicants are ranked initially for consideration according to their GPA, full assessment of an applicant’s file includes careful attention to the Statement of Interest, writing sample, and letters of recommendation. We look at numbers, but we want people who are as imaginative as they are capable.

The Diploma in Creative Writing can be obtained in conjunction with an MA or PhD in English.

The Graduate Diploma in World Literature can be obtained in conjunction with an MA or PhD degree in English, Humanities, or Translation Studies.
