Application Process
Applying to the graduate program in Geography is straightforward for all prospective applicants, both domestic and international.
The first step is to identify and contact faculty members whose research aligns with your interests. In your message, briefly explain why you are interested in their work and outline the skills, experience, and perspective you would bring. We encourage you to review our Faculty Profile page to learn more about potential supervisors.
After connecting with and securing interest from a potential supervisor, you may proceed with the online application through the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Required Application Materials
All Applicants
- Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
- Letters of Recommendation
- MA/MSc: 2 Letters
- PhD: 3 Letters
- Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV), including current courses and/or employment since completion of your most recent degree.
- Proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
MA/MSc Applicants
- Statement of Research Interests (maximum 250 words)
PhD Applicants
- Statement of Research Interests (maximum 500 words)
- Major research paper or thesis chapter (maximum 30 pages)
Guidance for the Statement of Research Interest
The Statement of Research Interests should clearly outline your academic background, research interests, and reasons for pursuing graduate studies in Geography. It should identify the research topics, geographic scholarship, and faculty expertise that align with your interests, and demonstrate how your academic, research, professional, and/or community experiences have prepared you for graduate-level study. The statement should also explain why you are a strong candidate for your chosen program and how graduate studies at York will support your academic and career goals.
Selection Criteria
Admission to the MA, MSc and PhD programs is highly competitive, and spaces are limited, particularly for international applicants. Successful applicants typically demonstrate a strong academic record, strong letters of recommendation, a clear and feasible research proposal, and alignment with the research expertise of a prospective supervisor.

Establishing a connection with a prospective supervisor is an essential step in the admissions process. Admission to the program requires the support of a faculty member who is willing and available to supervise your research.
