Admission Requirements

Preparing your application to graduate studies at York University and/or other interested universities requires research and planning. Some students start preparing their plan for graduate studies as early as two years before they submit their application. Consider the following information below to help guide you through a successful application process.

  • BA Honours degree in philosophy, or its equivalent;
  • At least a B+ average in the last two years of study;
  • It is recommended that students applying to the program have studied some logic and have some background in the history of philosophy.

Graduates with a Master's Degree in Philosophy, while B+ is the minimum GPA average to be eligible for admission to the program, successful applicants normally have a GPA of at least an A-.

Students must apply, meet the admission requirements, and be admitted separately to both the JD and MA programs, indicating their interest in the dual program.

Students who are completing an MA degree in Philosophy and would like to apply to the PhD program in Philosophy will also need to apply online and pay a fee of $140.00 CDN.

Transcripts from any previous institutions will need to be mailed to the Graduate Admissions office (See address above).

For York University Internal applicants:  York Transcripts will be downloaded by the Graduate Admissions office, you do not need to order York official transcripts to be sent to the Graduate Admissions office.
