How to Apply

Thanks to a recent $2 million endowment, well–qualified applicants can expect to receive extremely competitive financial packages.

Application Information

  • Users will be brought to the online application by clicking on the button above.
  • Applications are open from October 15 to January 15.
  • The program admits students only once per year beginning September 1.
  • Application status can be checked at any time in MyFile.

Application Requirements

To apply for graduate studies at York University, you must complete and submit the following:

  • Application fee (to accompany online Application for Graduate Admission)
    The application fee is $130 CDN, payable by Visa or MasterCard. The application fee is non-refundable.
  • If you do not wish to submit your credit card online, or if you do not have a Visa or MasterCard, please contact York's Office of Admissions at 416–736–5000.
  • Your application will be processed upon receipt of your fee payment.

Please note once you have uploaded your documents you will not be able to go back and upload any changes to your already uploaded documents.

  • Supplementary Information Form: to be completed with three (3) recommendations. Your referees will then be emailed a link to upload their reference letter to support your Graduate Admission application.
  • Statement of Interest: a letter (500 words) addressed to the Program Admissions Committee, outlining your background in Philosophy and your reasons for wanting to pursue an advanced degree.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): outline your academic background, publications, awards, work experience, etc.
  • Writing sample: for those applying to the PhD, an academic paper of no more than 5000 words, or a chapter from a Master’s thesis. For those applying to the MA, an academic paper of no more than 5000 words (can be two shorter pieces) or a sample from an honour's paper.
  • Transcripts: all post-secondary transcripts outside of York University can be uploaded, but are not considered official until they are received in a sealed envelope from the institution to the Graduate Admissions office (address listed below).  Photocopied, faxed or verified true copies are not considered official documents.
