How to Apply - Faculty-Led

Learn about a new culture, country, develop and enhance language skills or try and discover something entirely new – the world is your classroom! Take our courses for 1-6 weeks during York University Terms and earn between 3.0 – 6.0 credits that will count toward your degree at York.

  • My study abroad experience in Rio de Janeiro was one of the most memorable and impactful experiences of my university journey. Beyond the classroom, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in Brazilian culture, connect with welcoming and vibrant people, and explore historic and iconic sites throughout the city. From experiencing the energy of the local environment and cuisine to visiting landmarks and learning about Brazil’s history firsthand, the experience broadened my perspective in ways that cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom setting. Step 1

Browse through our program options and ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. Attend an information session to learn more about the program.

Step 2

Submit an application form for the course you're interested in ahead of the deadline.

Step 3

After you've been accepted, enroll in the course, pay your program fee, tuition, flight expenses and travel insurance.

Step 4

Attend a mandatory pre-departure session to learn about your course, destination country, and more. Complete Safety Abroad requirements. 

Step 5

Join your peers abroad and immerse yourself in a one-of-a-kind learning experience!

Step 6

Complete Feedback Survey to provide valuable insights and share your experience.  

  • Every undergraduate student (Canadian or international) can participate. In some cases, graduate students are eligible. 
  • General Program Eligibility Requirements:  
    • Students must be at least 18 years of age by the time they undertake a study abroad course.  
    • Students must have a valid passport and obtain a visa (if needed) at least 1 month before program start date. Their passport should be valid until at least 6 months after their intended return date, depending on their program country. Check the embassy/ consulate pages for specific country requirements.  
  • Check the course pages to see specific eligibility requirements/pre-requisites.  
  • Speak to the International Programs Coordinator (yuabroad@yorku.ca) to get more information. 
  1. Pay your deposit of $500 and program fee before the deadline:

Remaining program fee  February 1, 2027, for programs going abroad in Summer 2027 

A $500 non-refundable* deposit per course must be submitted by the deadlines listed above. These fees are non-refundable once charged and are taken as a commitment that the student will participate in the study abroad course. All courses are capped, and spots are considered based on the course instructor’s decision.  

Students who are accepted will receive a notification with instructions to complete the program fee payment online.  

If the remaining program fee is not paid before the deadline, your deposit of $500 will not be refunded, and you will be automatically withdrawn from the course.  

*Unless the courses are cancelled due to low enrollment and natural disasters/political unrest.  

2. Enroll in courses: 

  • Enroll in the course(s) through the REM system. Enrollment in these courses is restricted. Note that you will not be able to enroll in the faculty-led study abroad course unless you have been approved to participate and have paid the deposit.  

3. Coordinate with your course instructor before booking flights to and from your study abroad destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Faculty-led Study Abroad course expenses include:  

  • Program fee: Paid to York International and includes accommodation, study and cultural trips, local transport, and other hosted activities.  
  • Please  be aware that program fees are approximate and are subject to change based on the final number of students enrolled in the course, foreign exchange rate fluctuations, and other factors beyond York International’s control.) 
  • Tuition: Paid directly to York University as per other courses. Amount variesdepending on whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, domestic or international student (refer to the Student Financial Services website for more information).  
  • Flights*: To and from your destination. York University does not make flight nor travel insurance arrangements for students. For each course, you will be given specific information as to when to arrive and where you will be picked up and dropped off. Any activities or plans, including early arrival or late departure from the destination country, made outside the course program are the student’s responsibility.  
  • Food expenses: you will need to cover these costs during portions of your trip.  
  • Travel Insurance: Students are required to purchase  GuardMe. travel insurance for the duration of their time abroad, regardless of having alternative coverage. Policies must be purchased prior to travel and from within Canada.  
  • Spending money: For personal and miscellaneous costs.  
  • Visa:  Some students may require a tourist visa to enter their destination country. If a visa is required, it is the student’s responsibility to apply well ahead of their program start date and pay for their own visa. 

Make sure to keep an eye on your email inbox for important communications from YorkU. In the event of an emergency or another serious situation, the University will contact you as soon as possible with information, guidance, and a plan to get you home if needed. 

Students that wish to withdraw from a Faculty-led Study Abroad Course at any time must first contact the International Programs Coordinator at yuabroad@yorku.ca as well as their Course Director indicating the reason for withdrawal.   

Course fees are subject to the financial deadlines set by York University. The program deposit fee is non-refundable, and no exceptions will be granted. Refunds of the remainder of the program fee will be given based on the following criteria:

Final program fee  Non-refundable if payment was already made on your behalf in booking accommodations/activities/anything related to the program, unless course is cancelled. 

*Refund will be conducted with a deduction in the Moneris Fee (transaction fee).   

*Please note that failing to attend, withdrawing from, or not completing your intended study abroad program for which you have received funding may affect your eligibility to retain the associated bursary or funding. Any study abroad funding may be subject to review, withdrawal, or recovery by York International.
