2023 Community Safety Award

Nomination Information

The form below must be completed for each submission.  A nomination letter including a complete & thorough narrative justifying the event(s) for nomination may be attached or entered into the text box.  

The submission may include supporting letter(s), from other members of the department and/or external sources outside of the Community Safety Department. These can be attached as separate files. 

If there is more than 1 nominator for that same nominee, each nominator must complete a separate form.

An individual/group may be nominated for more than one category.

For the 2023 awards, the period covered for the awards will be from October 1st, 2022 to October 1st, 2023.

Submissions must be received by Tuesday, October 31st. 2023.  The award presentation will take place in December at the holiday breakfast.

Nomination Letter

Please describe in as much detail as possible (maximum of 2 pages) how the nominee(s) fit the criteria of the award(s) for which they are being nominated.  Please see the awards criteria for examples of qualities that the committee will be considering in scoring nominations.

Selection Committee

The selection committee will be comprised of three members of the Community Safety management team.   The selection committee will review nominations and use the criteria listed for each individual award to select the award recipients.

Awards Criteria

  1. Demonstrates commitment to campus/community safety beyond expectations.
  2. Demonstrates professionalism through conduct, appearance, deportment, teamwork and inclusiveness.
  3. Enhances reputation of the department, its members and the university.
  4. Demonstrates innovation, initiative and critical thinking.

*Please note, only York Security Services staff are eligible for this award.

  1. Demonstrates dedication and a commitment to excellence in the provision of safety services.
  2. Takes extraordinary steps to ensure that the expectations of community members are effectively met and that they are highly satisfied with the services provided.
  3. Builds exceptionally positive relationships with York community members.
  4. Promotes and exemplifies the values of York University and the department, including a commitment to accessibility, inclusion/intersectionality, community engagement, collaboration, and community-centric approaches to safety.
  1. Is a reliable and dedicated member of the Community Safety team who is willing and eager to lend a helping hand and goes beyond the call of duty to support colleagues within the department.
  2. Makes a significant contribution to the team’s work and successes.
  3. Builds exceptionally positive relationships with other team members.
  4. Is considered by colleagues to be an exceptional role model who promotes and exemplifies the values of York University and the department, including a commitment to accessibility, inclusion/intersectionality, community engagement, collaboration, and community-centric approaches to safety.
  1. Inspires others to achieve excellence in the prevention and/or delivery of safety services.
  2. Has a clear vision, listens and communicates effectively, motivates and energizes others, takes responsibility for their decisions, acknowledges the contributions of others and achieves positive results.
  3. Nurtures the strengths and talents of their team members and/or colleagues, empowers them and contributes to their successes.
  4. Is an exceptional role model who promotes and exemplifies the values of York University and the department, including a commitment to accessibility, inclusion/intersectionality, community engagement, collaboration, and community-centric approaches to safety

Presented to a York University student community member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in their work within the Community Safety department at York University. The recipient of this award is recognized for their outstanding contributions to the safety and well-being of individuals and groups, as well as their commitment to upholding the core values of York University and the department. These values include:

  1. Exemplifying Decolonization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and intersectionality in all aspects of their work, ensuring that safety measures are accessible and beneficial to all members of the community.
  2. Community Centric Approaches: Utilizes community-centric approaches to safety, actively engaging with and involving the community in safety initiatives and valuing diverse perspectives and voices.
  3. Collaborative Engagement: Actively collaborates with stakeholders both within and outside the department to create a more inclusive and safer environment for everyone.
  4. Accessibility Advocacy: Advocates for and promotes accessibility, ensuring that safety measures are tailored to meet the needs of a diverse and inclusive community.
  5. Commitment to Community Engagement: Demonstrates a deep commitment to engaging with the community to better understand its unique needs and concerns, actively working to address these issues.
  6. The Decolonization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEDI) in Community Safety Excellence Award celebrates an individual who has shown exceptional leadership in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the context of community safety, making York University’s campuses safer and more welcoming for all.

Appendix

Community Service- Enhances the student, staff, faculty campus experience at York University.  Engages with the community in an open, caring, and supportive fashion.  Proactive in their outreach, attention and response to serving the community and its concerns.  Performs actions, promotes actions that benefit the community or institution in a demonstrative manner. Has proven to build rapport/credibility with a wide variety of community members.  Promotes the values of York including but not limited to; inclusivity, diversity, equity and social justice.

Exceeds Expectations- Goes above and beyond expectations of duties.  Surprises others in the depth and quality of service provided.   Received praise and positive feedback on actions, service provided to peers or the community.  Makes an unexpected or unique contribution in support of department or community goals

Campus/Student Relations – Enhances, promotes, increases, the student experience, relations, goodwill.  Reaches out to individuals, groups, associations in improving the atmosphere, confidence, trust, experience of campus life and/or relationships with the department, its members.  Works with internal and or external partners in betterment of campus/student relations.  Building synergies with others to positively impact this area.

Reputation- Through direct actions, programs, initiatives, or outreach, demonstratively improves, supports, enhances the reputation of the Department of Community Safety and/or York University in the eyes, minds of internal and/or external entities.  Promotes professional image through deportment, demeanor and actions.  Is seen as an Ambassador of York by the community.

Campus Safety- Through direct actions, programs, initiatives or outreach demonstratively impacts, improves, supports campus safety either individually or collectively.  This criteria scores higher when the actions etc. are outside of normal functioning of the job responsibility.

Selflessness- Through direct actions, programs, initiatives or outreach demonstratively and positively impacts, an individual, group or community through actions that speak to the human condition and betterment of same.  Goes above and beyond the normal response.  Does not seek benefit or acknowledgement for actions.  Random or deliberate acts of kindness and support.

Innovative- Through direct actions, programs, initiatives or outreach demonstratively and positively attempts to try something new, improved, or revised that impacts the quality, effectiveness, efficiency or experience of their work, environment, peers, the community, and or the campus.  Makes an unexpected or unique contribution to department or community goals.

Initiative- Without prompting or direction takes decisive, reasoned action that demonstratively and positively does or attempts to improve the quality, effectiveness, efficiency or experience of their work, environment, peers, the community, and or the campus.  Makes an unexpected or unique contribution to department or community goals.

Health & Safety- Through direct actions, programs, initiatives or outreach demonstratively and positively does or attempts to improve, the health and safety of themselves, peers, or community. Higher scores would align to those areas where impacts are clearly articulated.  Higher scores include areas impacting others, community, selflessness.

Respect, Diversity & Inclusiveness- Through direct actions, words, programs, initiatives or outreach demonstratively and positively does or attempts to improve, engage, support. Promotes respect, diversity, and inclusiveness among staff, faculty, students, peers which would include external communities as well as the York Community.
