Praxis Makes Perfect

A Podcast by the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion

This podcast is dedicated to the pursuit of praxis as a transformational strategy in all things DEDI (Decolonizing Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) within the York community.

Praxis præk.sɪs : the process of using a theory or something that you have learned in a practical way. (Cambridge Dictionary)

When we imagine deep reflective thinking, we visualize it as standing (or sitting) still. In this sense, thought tends to be treated as the polar opposite of action and engagement. This isn't surprising because thought requires detachment. But too much thinking can also delay action. We've all been there. On the flip side, acting thoughtlessly and not being self-aware means change can't happen.

This podcast is interested in the overlap between reflection and action. You could say we're obsessed with it. And the term for this combination of reflection and practice is - you guessed it -Praxis. We believe that this unity of thought and practice is at the heart of the work of promoting and enacting social justice and building inclusive communities, which is what DEDI should be about.

The Paradox of Dis Ableism and Access

This discussion and episode of Praxis Makes Perfect explores the contradictions, controversies and challenges of the dis/ableist systems in which we work, study, and live. It tackles issues like bridging the gap between our dis/ableist biases and systems, allyship and the expansive possibilities of a truly inclusive co-existence. This session was conducted in partnership with The Teaching Commons and Student Accessibility Services during Inclusion Week 2025.
