GA (Graduate Assistant) Training Fund

The University has currently made an annual fund of $220,000 available to Researchers who hire a GA (Graduate Assistant) on an external grant, subject to eligibility and the process outlined below. The fund is available for each of 2021-22 and 2022-23 years of the York - CUPE 3903 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, with the first call in February 2022 (for the 2021-22 year) and the second call in October 2022 (for the 2022-23 year).

The number of awards available for each of the two calls is limited to 40 awards, normally in the amount of $5,500*.

*For the 2022/2023 year the amount of the awards will be $7,000 (as compared to the normal amount of $5,500).

Eligible GA Assignments – 22/23 Call

Graduate Assistantships that are eligible for a $7000 award to the Researcher include:

  • Graduate Assistantships that begins in Fall 2022
  • Graduate Assistantships that begins in Winter 2023
  • Graduate Assistantships that begins in Summer 2023

A Graduate Assistantship is defined in the York - CUPE 3903 Unit 3 Collective Agreement as work performed by full-time graduate students registered at York who are receiving financial assistance from or through the University and in connection with such assistance are employed in administrative, clerical and research work. Graduate Assistantships have time restrictions (a maximum of 135 hours per term), with additional employer (Researcher) paid health and vacation benefits.

In order to be eligible to receive GAT Funds a full-time faculty member must:

  1. Be in receipt of external research funding;
  2. Commit to hiring a Graduate Assistant in order to have GAT Funds provisionally identified for their use; and
  3. Have executed a contract for a Graduate Assistant in order to receive the GAT Funds.

Applications are now closed for the 2022-2023 award cycle.
