Students registered in the Graduate Program in Kinsiology and Health Sciece are encourage to apply for internal scholarships and awards. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the minimum criteria for eligibility are met when applying for a scholarship/award.
Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science Graduate Student Travel Award
The Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science (KAHS) Graduate Student Travel Award provides financial support to offset the costs of students attending a conference to present their graduate research.
- Application deadline: February 1, 2011
- Award Value: $500. up to 3 awards in each of the three KAHS graduate fields of study: Integrative Physiology of Exercise, Neuroscience and Biomechanics, and Health and Fitness Behaviours.
To be eligible to apply:
- Applicants must be registered full-time graduate students in the Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science, in the 2nd year of MA, MSc or MFSc, or in the PhD program, with a minimum grade point average of 7.5 (B+).
- The applicant must be 1st author on a conference submission.
- The conference must occur between September 1 and August 31 of the current academic year.
All applications must include the completed KAHS Graduate Student Travel Award Application ; a copy of the conference flyer (which indicates the name of conference, location and dates); a copy of your abstract submission (including all authors). Details regarding notification of the scheduling of your presentation may be included, but the committee recognizes that this information may not be available at the time of application.
EXTERNAL
Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships, fellowships, and other awards tenable at York University. Applicants do not need to be accepted to graduate school at the time of application and should consider applying a year before planning to undertake their studies. Full-time registered students in their last year of undergraduate studies at York must submit their application to the graduate program that is affiliated with their undergraduate studies in order for their application to be peer-ranked.
Major external awards pertinent to students registered in the Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University are listed below. Deadlines for the 2012-2013 applications will be updated when available. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the minimum criteria for eligibility are met when applying for a scholarship/award.
Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)
The 2012-2013 Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) online application is available until October 19, 2011.
- KAHS application deadline: October 20, 2011
- Award Value: $5,000 per term; which may consist of two or three consecutive terms.
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program supports excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels.
You may be considered for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) if you:
- have an ‘A’ average (The numerical equivalent of A minus is 80% and over.);
- plan to be enrolled full-time in an eligible program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree at an eligible institution in Ontario;
- are a Canadian citizen, Protected Person, or Permanent Resident or have received a temporary resident visa as a member of the student class under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada);
OGS will not accept applications submitted on a previous year's form, therefore, be sure that your applicant and all supporting OGS documents are for the 2012-2013 year.
TRI-Council Awards
You may submit only one application per year to one granting agency (NSERC or SSHRC or CIHR). All three granting councils offer Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) to the top-ranked applicants at each level (master’s and doctoral).
In order to be eligible for NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR funding, your grade point average must be 80% or higher (first class average A-) in EACH of the last two completed periods of full-time study. (The years are calculated separately and not combined. The grade point averages are NOT rounded up, so you need to have at least 80% and not 79.5%).
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Scholarship (NSERC)
Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) provide financial support to high-calibre scholars in natural sciences or engineering disciplines.
Master’s Awards
- KAHS application deadline: October 4, 2011
- Award Value: CGS M Value: $17,500 per year; PGS M Value: $17,300 per year
To be eligible to apply:
- have achieved a first-class average (80% or higher), as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or
- you must not have previously taken up an NSERC PGS A, PGS M, IPS 1,* or a CGS M for the program of study to which you are currently applying for funding; and
- you must not hold, or have held, a CGS M from either CIHR or SSHRC.
In evaluating your eligibility, NSERC will consider all studies counted towards a graduate degree, whether completed at the degree-granting institution or not. NSERC will count two sessions of part-time study as one session of full-time study.
Doctoral Awards
- KAHS application deadline: October 4, 2011
- Award Value: CGS D, $35,000 (for up to three year); PGS D, $21,000 (for up to three year)
These programs offer support for a minimum duration of 24 months and a maximum duration of 36 months.
You may take up your PGS M or PGS D at any eligible Canadian university. You may also take it up at any eligible foreign university, provided you have received a previous degree in the natural sciences or engineering from a Canadian university.
To be eligible to apply:
- have achieved a first-class average (80% or higher), as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 24 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or
- if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program, you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between four and 36 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding;
- you must not have previously taken up an NSERC PGS B, PGS D, or IPS 2,* or a CGS D for the program of study to which you are currently applying for funding; and
- you must not hold, or have held, a CGS D from either CIHR or SSHRC
In the evaluation of your eligibility, NSERC will consider all studies counted towards a graduate degree, whether completed at the degree-granting institution or not. NSERC will count two sessions of part-time study as one session of full-time study.
If you registered in a master’s degree and subsequently transferred to a doctoral degree, the months in the doctoral degree will be calculated starting from the first academic session in which you were officially registered in your PhD program.

Scholarships and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Canada Graduate Scholarships Program (SSHRC) supports university-based research and graduate training in the social sciences and humanities.
Master’s Awards
The J.-Armand Bombardier CGS Master’s program seeks to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel by supporting students in the social sciences and humanities who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

- Award Value: J.-Armand Bombardier CGS Master’s program $17,500 per year (up to 2 years)
To be considered for this award, you must:
- have achieved a first-class average (80% or higher), as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- be applying for support to pursue your first graduate degree (i.e., master's or equivalent) and not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study at the proposed start date of the award: all previous studies at the graduate level, regardless of discipline, will be included in determining eligibility;
- not have already received an award for master's-level study from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR;
- not be applying for graduate funding in the 2009-10 academic year to NSERC or CIHR;
- not be pursuing a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Doctoral Awards
The SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and the J.-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarships programs aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel in the social sciences and humanities.
- KAHS application deadline: October 27, 2011
- Award Value: J.-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarships, $35,000 per annum for 36 months; SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships, $20,000 per annum for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months.
To qualify to apply for SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships /J.-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Awards programs, you must:
- have achieved a first-class average (80% or higher), as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- be applying for support to pursue your first PhD (or equivalent);
- be pursuing doctoral studies (or a combined MA/PhD) in the social sciences or humanities;
- not have already received a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree or combined MA/PhD;
- not be applying in the 2009-10 academic year to NSERC or CIHR;
- not be pursuing a degree program that combines undergraduate and graduate degrees.
You need not be assured of admission to a program at the time of application.
- Canadian Institute for Health Research Scholarship (CIHR)

Canadian Institute for Health Research Scholarship (CIHR) provides funding opportunities for health research in Biomedical; Clinical; Health systems services; and social, cultural, environmental and population health.
To apply for CIHR funding, you must:
- have achieved a first-class average (80% or higher), as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent;
- be affiliated with an eligible Canadian institution or organization by the time the funding begins;
- not be employed by Canadian federal government departments or agencies or for-profit organizations unless affiliated with a university;
- not have a financial interest holding of more than 5% in a company proposed as an industry partner for research funding
Master’s Awards: Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships

Doctoral Awards: Doctoral Research Award
The CIHR Doctoral Research Awards consist of two programs administered through a single application:
The Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Awards (CGS-D) program provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.
The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.
Candidates apply to the CIHR Doctoral Awards competition and top-ranked candidates are awarded a CGS-D or DFSA depending on the proposed location of research. Both awards are of equivalent value.
Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Master’s Studentship Award
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario offers a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree. Candidates will undertake full-time training in cardiovascular/cerebrovascular research under an identified academic supervisor. Candidates must not hold another major award concurrently. The award will normally commence on July 1 and run for 12 consecutive months.

You may be considered for a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Master’s Studentship Award if you:
- have achieved a minimum of 80% on course work completed in the last two years of study.
- have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree;
- are enrolled at an Ontario university;
- are a Canadian Citizen and permanent resident of Canada;
