How to Apply



DEADLINE: January 15, 2012

A completed application package must be received by Graduate Admissions at York University by January 15, 2012.

This program does not accept applications for January (Winter) 2012 or May/June/July (Spring/Summer) 2012.  When completing the online Application for Graduate Admission, the 'Program of Study, Session' option, MUST be September (Fall) 2012.

Minimum admission requirements

The number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available. Meeting minimum admission requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

To be considered for admission to any of the Master degree programs, a student must:

  • Be a graduate of a recognized university, with at least a B+ standing in the last two years of full-time study, or with qualifications accepted as equivalent by the Senate Committee on Admissions; and,

  • Have a strong academic background relevant to the area of study to be pursued at the Masters level; and,

  • A faculty member available for supervision.

The Kinesiology & Health Science Graduate Committee will review the candidate's application and make recommendations to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

All entering PhD students shall have:

  • At least a A- standing in their last two years of full-time study;

  • Completed courses equivalent to those required for the current MA/MSc. thesis degree in Kinesiology and Health Science at York

  • A faculty member available for supervision; and

  • Been assessed as suitable for PhD level study by the Kinesiology and Health Science Graduate Executive Committee. The latter decision shall be based on such evidence as letters of reference, the applicant’s written statement and the applicant’s research and academic record.  If the candidate is admitted with specified academic deficits, these shall be made up in the first year of doctoral study and shall not count towards required courses for the PhD.

Minimum funding guarantees are made to all students accepted to the Kinesiology and Health Science program. Levels of funding differ dependent on degree program and academic standing. Funding sources include teaching, graduate, or research assistantships, external scholarships, as well as funds provided by the supervisor.

All applicants MUST complete the Graduate Admissions Application Package available at York University Graduate Admission

Applicants must complete the Supplementary Information and Recommendation (referee) forms accessed through MyFile (forms will be available 48 hours after you submit your online application).

In addition, all applicants MUST....

  • Contact specific faculty members with whom you wish to work and discuss with them the potential research opportunites.
  • Identify potential faculty member supervisors by listing the names on Supplementary Information form. You can list up to 4 names.
  • Letters of Recommendation are now requested online through Graduate Admissions. Applicants must provide the names and email addresses of 2 referees using "MyFile". 48 hours after the applicant submits the form, Graduate Admissions will email a PDF form to each referee with instructions. NOTE: It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the correct email address for each referee is provided. No more than 2 referees are required.

In addition to the online application, you must...

  • Mail, Courier or drop off in peron your Statement of Interest, CV and sample of Written Work documents in a single package.


  • Your Statement of Interest should outline your past areas of study and specifically what graduate area you are most interested in for your graduate degree. You can use any personal or professional experiences that you think reflects why a graduate program in kinesiology and health science would be a suitable area of study.
 
  • Include a Curriculum vitae: an up-to-date CV or Resumé
 
  • Include one sample of Written Work: a recent sample of your written work in the form of an essay, report or project.
