Science and
Technology Studies (STS) is an
interdisciplinary program that offers courses of study leading to either
a BA or BSc degree. Its purpose is to expand our understanding of
science and technology by exploring their social, cultural,
philosophical and material dimensions. To achieve that purpose, the
program draws upon the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences
to offer courses treating specific scientific ideas, as well as courses
addressing broader topics such as science and gender, science and
religion, and technology and cultural values. Students are encouraged to
draw connections across traditional boundaries as they seek an
intellectual appreciation for the sciences and technology as powerful
means for understanding, embodying and shaping the world and ourselves.
Students will learn to analyze complex ideas about science and
technology, and to discover how to trace the origins and implications of
events and patterns of thought in the past and present.

future students:
As one of York’s
smaller programs of study,
STS brings students the
possibility of a strong mentoring relationship with core faculty.
Undergraduate students have the opportunity to work on research projects
with faculty, or join the editorial office of the internationally
renowned research journal in the history of science,
Isis,
which moved to York in 2004.

Graduates of this
program are well equipped for employment in science journalism, museum
work, and science policy as well as for future studies in law, medicine
and education. Several of our students have also gone on to graduate
studies in the field.
The program sponsors
the
Brownbag Research Seminar
series, featuring weekly seminars on relevant topics in the field of
Science and Technology and participates in the Bethune College sponsored
events and speaker series.
Members of our program coordinate the Research Seminars in Science &
Technology Studies. The series features bi-weekly seminars on a wide
range of STS-related topics, and is sponsored by the Division of Natural
Science, the Office of the Vice-President
Academic, and the York University
Bookstore. Now in its 14th year, the
series has hosted over 500 speakers from Canada and around the world. It is
open to the public, and STS majors are especially encouraged to attend.
Members of the program also help coordinate the Bethune Seminar Series, which features 3-4 large
public lectures each academic year. This year's theme is "Science & Art."
