Using and Adaptive Online Learning Environment to Assess and Improve First-Year Math for Economics

This project plans to increase student success and retention among first-year economics majors through elearning technologies. In 2020-2021, this project will embed the ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (PPL) System – an adaptive online learning environment – in the first-year Mathematics for Economists course, ECON1530. Using ALEKS, students write an initial formative assessment during the first week of class. This identifies knowledge shortcomings using an adaptive. For example, how students answer their first question will affect what kind of second question they receive. To master their shortcomings, students complete a learning module and practice problems. They must answer 3 questions in a row correctly before advancing to the next topic.  Lastly, students write an adaptive summative assessment on ALEKS using a computer and internet connection. The project is easily scaled – instructors need not spend time writing a term test. It is also low-cost – a one-year subscription to ALEKS is $29.95.
